GRUNGE - E1

Grunge

Grunge started in Seatle, Washintong during the mid-1980s. It’s a subgenre of the alternative rock that was influenced by the Hard rock punk, Heavy metal and Indie rock.

This genre started to be successful in the beginning of the 90s with the release of Nirvana' s Nevermind, and the MTV (music TV) massive diffusion.
The success of bands like Pearl Jam, The Breeders, Green River, Sound Garden or White Zombie provided the popularity of alternative rock around the Generation X (grunge generation).

Grunge moved from a local sound in Seattle through national and international venues and became a part of the musical vocabulary of most subsequent bands. Most modern musicians owe a debt of gratitude to those plaid wearing teens from Seattle.

In 1989 British journalist Andy Catlin came to Seattle. They showed him around town and the result was a big story in Britain's Melody Maker, 1989, titled "Seattle, Rock City". Suddenly the US underground was buzzing with the news about the Seattle movement. Art Chantry aptly described the upcoming months as "an explosion of subculture".
Many locals bands hated the attention.

90s were referred to as a decade of unisex anti-fashion. The look was characterized by the way, lack of style in and of itself: long, dirty hair, layers bulky and baggy pieces and general disdain for anything polished and trim.

The popularity started to disappear in the end of the 90s. However has being an important influence in the later music and fashion.

The evolution of the Grunge involves a lot of different variants in fashion and music.
I’ve focused my research on the modern and actual style that is influenced by the Grunge son of the Punk and Rock.
Style with the 90's bases, dirty appearance, ripped t-shirts and jeans, layers bulky and Denim jacket.

In the 80s the name Grunge was to describe a very specific genre of people, however the term is now also used loosely to describe all fashion, looking a bit chaotic and dishevelled.
